Touching Lives Online -- And Down The Street

Center for Online Learning’s year-round community outreach and generosity are inspiring – and reflect the university’s core values.

At the end of the summer, student support staff in Saint Leo's Center for Online Learning (COL) bought thousands of pencils and hundreds of backpacks, notebooks and supplies for inner-city children starting the new school year.

At Thanksgiving, they placed countless cans of food and boxes of cereal in collection barrels for needy families.

At Christmas, they collected everything from toys to blankets to make the season a bit merrier for those experiencing hard times.

And throughout the year, they contributed hundreds of dollars to multiple causes and charitable organizations.

Putting integrity and community before fear, Dee Austin assisted police in capturing multiple armed robbery suspects.

Dee Austin, an enrollment coordinator in Saint Leo University’s Student Support Center, has worked in the Center for Online Learning for 13 years. She earned her bachelor’s degree through the university’s online criminal justice program and now she is pursuing a master’s degree in criminal justice online.

Center For Online Learning Volunteers Lend A Hand – And Some Muscle

Sometimes the opportunity to help
out can be right before your eyes.

Or just down the block.

The student advisors and enrollment counselors who work at Saint Leo’s Center for Online Learning Student Support Center in downtown Tampa consider themselves “helpers.”

Every day, they assist prospective and current students enrolled in the university’s online degree programs by providing information, answering questions, offering advice, and sometimes by just lending a caring ear.

Given Saint Leo University’s 40-year history of providing educational benefits to members of the U.S. Armed Forces, very often those students are active military or veteran students.

Community Service Day events at Saint Leo demonstrate the university’s core values in action.

“The only ones among you who will be really happy are those that have sought and found how to serve.” Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965, Nobel Peace Prize)

It was reflected in the laughter of students such as Majalukah Berry and Jodecia Parkins, Saint Leo University students and friends from Jamaica who said standing for two hours filling plastic bags with lentils and rice “didn’t feel like work at all.”
